The five pathways, explained

American college soccer isn't one route — it's five distinct systems, each with its own level, cost, academics, and rules. Here's the honest picture of each. No favourites.

National Junior College Athletic Association

NJCAA

Two-year colleges (often called "juco"). Players compete for two seasons, earn credits or an associate degree, then transfer up to a four-year programme — frequently on a stronger scholarship than they'd have landed straight away.

Why many players start here

A lower-pressure entry point with real playing time, a cost-effective route, and a proven springboard to NCAA and NAIA programmes. Strong for players who want to develop, get game footage, and prove themselves on U.S. soil first.

LevelEntry → developmental; top juco is high
Duration2 years, then transfer
ScholarshipsAthletic aid available
Typical cost
AcademicsMost accessible entry
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

NAIA

Four-year colleges outside the NCAA, often smaller institutions. Competitive soccer with more flexible eligibility rules and a friendlier registration process for international players.

Why players choose it

Athletic scholarships are widely available, the international eligibility process is simpler than the NCAA, and the standard at the top end is genuinely strong. A four-year home from day one.

LevelSolid → strong; wide range
Duration4-year degree
ScholarshipsAthletic + academic aid
Typical cost
AcademicsAccessible; flexible
NCAA Division I

NCAA D-I

The highest and most visible level of U.S. college soccer — big budgets, elite facilities, packed schedules, national exposure. The most demanding to reach and to hold a place in, athletically and academically.

The reality

The most competitive route with the strongest resources and the clearest pathway toward professional soccer. Recruitment is early and selective, and eligibility rules are the strictest — we advise you on the current framework.

LevelHighest
Duration4-year degree
ScholarshipsAthletic aid; rules evolving
Typical cost
AcademicsHighest; strict eligibility
NCAA Division II

NCAA D-II

A strong competitive level with a more balanced athlete experience than D-I — serious soccer alongside a genuinely manageable academic and personal life. Athletic scholarships are common.

Why it fits many

High-standard football with athletic aid and a saner day-to-day balance. Often the sweet spot for strong players who want a real life beyond the pitch too.

LevelStrong
Duration4-year degree
ScholarshipsAthletic aid common (often partial)
Typical cost
AcademicsStandard NCAA eligibility
NCAA Division III

NCAA D-III

Competitive four-year soccer at institutions that don't award athletic scholarships — but frequently offer generous academic and need-based aid. Often excellent, well-resourced schools.

Worth knowing

No athletic scholarships, but strong academic and merit aid can make the net cost very competitive — sometimes lower than a partial athletic offer elsewhere. Great for players prioritising education and a full student experience.

LevelCompetitive; broad range
Duration4-year degree
ScholarshipsAcademic / need-based only
Typical cost
AcademicsOften the highest

No favourites. Every one of these can be the right home — the best fit depends on your level, your grades, your budget, and your goals. Eligibility and scholarship rules change regularly (NCAA rules especially), so we always advise on the current landscape at the time you apply.

Good to know

Common questions

Do I have to be released by a club to do this?
No. Red Wall is open to any talented player exploring the U.S. college route — whether you're at an academy, playing semi-pro, in the grassroots game, or simply looking for the right next step. Being released is just one of many starting points.
When should I start looking into this?
Earlier is better, because U.S. recruitment and eligibility have their own timelines that don't always match the UK calendar. But there's rarely a "too late" — part of what we do is help you understand where you are in the cycle and what's realistic from here.
Are there scholarships, and will it cost my family a fortune?
Many pathways offer athletic and/or academic scholarships, and the net cost varies enormously by division and school — a well-chosen route can be far more affordable than the sticker price suggests. We help you understand the real numbers before you commit to anything.
Do I need to be Welsh, or under the FAW?
No. We're the official partner of the FAW, so Welsh players have a direct, embedded route to us — but talented players across the whole of the UK are welcome to work with Red Wall.
What about NCAA eligibility and academics?
U.S. college soccer has academic and amateurism eligibility requirements, and the specifics differ across the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA. Guiding you through registration, eligibility, and timing is a core part of the year of support.
Is learning about my options free?
Yes. Understanding the pathways, the leagues, and where you might fit costs nothing. You only pay if and when you decide you'd like us to build your profile and represent you.
